What is Roller Derby?

"Roller derby is a contact sport played by two teams of five members roller skating in the same direction around a track. Game play consists of a series of short matchups ("jams") in which both teams designate a scoring player (the "jammer") who scores points by lapping members of the opposing team. The teams attempt to assist their own jammer while hindering the opposing jammer —in effect playing both offense and defense simultaneously." - Wikepedia

Roller derby is an exhilarating spectator sport that is taking the world by storm. It’s also one of the fastest growing women’s sports in the world and there are over 1,000 leagues across the globe – with more than 30,000 women playing roller derby internationally. BC alone has more than 12 roller derby leagues – including in Metro Vancouver, Sunshine Coast, BC Interior and Squamish. In fact, the inaugural Roller Derby World Cup took place in Toronto December 2-4, 2011.
